Publications can mean a lot of things – and I’ve done a lot of publications – but for now I’ll focus on The Compass. The Compass was originally four separate, smaller publications that served each market area for Success Group International. Those markets were independent contractors in the plumbing, roofing, electrical and HVAC fields. Working with a staff of only 5, we combined those into one large monthly membership publication. The result: An award-winning monthly magazine distributed to over 1,000 members.
As an art director, designer and contributing editor, my duties depended on the needs of the publication. One month I might be traveling and meeting with upcoming subjects, another month could include feature photography, or I might be coordinating a local professional photographer for the cover. Occasionally I had the pleasure of interviewing and writing feature articles on our successful members as well. Finally, all the print and distribution coordinating fell to me as well. Producing a stylish, well-written 40+ page monthly publication – with the smallest of staffs – is one of my proudest achievements.
