Regardless of one’s political affiliation, I think everyone can understand the appeal of working on something that’s bigger than them. And as a designer, working on something you truly believe in works wonders on your creativity and ability to produce work that works.
The poster won the Obama for America “Art Works” competition and won a Gold Graphex Award from the Art Directors Club of Tulsa. It won a Gold Award from Communications Arts and was included in their Illustration Annual that year. PRINT magazine included it on their list of “Top 24 Illustrations of 2013.” The poster was a popular addition to the OFA store and sold out its initial print run in less than 48 hours.
The design itself was an answer to the creative brief supplied by OFA. The jobs program, meant to encourage job growth in the U.S., had a heavy focus on infrastructure and revitalizing manufacturing in this country. What better way to illustrate that than literally reconstructing the flag from I-beams?
